Using Anger as  a Motivator

We spend a lot of time trying to figure out what motivates us:

1.  How big is your dream?
2. You’ve got to know your why!
3. What have you got to gain?
4.  Think about how good you’re going to feel and what you can do with the money!
5.  How can you help?

And having a passion to help someone can be effective, but we overlook a huge motivator that — in truth — is responsible for a LOT of progress and is much harder to stop, and that’s good ole ANGER! I have to tell you, ANGER can be scary!  When I was a younger man I got angry and at times it scared me, but that’s because it was immature, unfocused and essentially without purpose.  Anger, when properly harnessed and redirected, is a tremendous motivator!  Have you ever had someone tell you, “YOU CAN’T DO THAT!” and you came back with, “I’ll show you!”

Several years ago when coming through the ranks of the Professional Photographers Society, I had some things I needed to accomplish, but ONE OBSTACLE (person) seemed to be sabotaging everything I tried to do.  And one day I just got fed up! I got angry!  When I’m angry, I write, so I wrote a blog post and the jist of it was this:  “When faced with an obstacle there are three things you can do with it.  You can 1) go around it, 2) climb over it or 3) blow it to smithereens and drive leisurely through the space where the obstacle used to be!”

There were several reasons why I couldn’t post that article, but instead I harnessed the energy of that emotion. The Law of Attraction works on intense emotion! Joy is emotion, but so is intense anger; and both emotions will activate the law of attraction, and — IMHO — anger is a much stronger emotion than joy.  We normally associate anger with negativity — and it usually is, but it doesn’t have to be if the energy is channeled positively.  I mean the same fire that unbridled can destroy homes and forests, when contained and directed can power huge steam plants to create electricity, heat huge complexes and other things.  Fire isn’t inherently bad, and neither is anger if it’s channeled properly.

1.  Anger is not RAGE! It must be contained and focused.  My anger was focused on finding solutions to my problem; finding ways to get around or circumvent my obstacle! There HAD to be a solution and i was going to find it. When I asked the right question — how can I get around this — a number of answers presented themselves very quickly.

2. Anger must fuel determination.  “ I will NOT be denied!” When the answers were presented, I chose one and worked that plan. The anger was used to fuel my “why” and keep enough intensity involved.  Getting angry because someone said you couldn’t do something when you know you can, forces you to act with intensity rather than whence in pain and retreat.

3. Make sure the target is clear!  I was angry at a specific person, at a specific set of actions and results. My efforts were to neutralize their interference with my goals in a non-volatile way, and I found an ingenious way to make that happen. When executing my plan, I was not raging — I was calm, articulate, focused but intense and my mind was crystal clear about the result I was after.  The anger kept the ENERGY up that I needed to succeed. Many times we don’t succeed because we run out of energy. When you’re angry the energy is constantly regenerated.

4. When the job is done… let the anger go. Breathe. Celebrate your accomplishment; do a snoopy dance, write an “I told you so letter” or whatever your ritual is to end the batter. You CANT stay angry forever. The purpose of the anger is not hatred, it’s energy, intensity. You can be very intense without being angry… but sometimes there is not substitute for anger, like sometimes there’s no substitute for fire.  And anger — like fire — can also have a cleansing effect.

Keep the metaphor! There’s fire in the furnace, you’re fueling the engine, and when you don’t need the fuel anymore… let the fire die… and celebrate your wins.  Channeling your anger into a positive purpose is a matter of mindset, and when you master your mindset… you’ll master your life.

I am an optimist! YES! I’m a card carrying, lifetime member of the Optimist’s club — not the organization, mind you, but of the mindset.

I believe things are good, and I believe things will work out! I don’t necessarily believe that those things will happen by themselves, without intervention.   I believe that “life” sometimes finds it necessary to wake us up, to get our attention, to rattle us out of complacency and make us engage life and take part in our own existence, and our own future.

Of course, when that happens we have a choice. We can choose to continue floating down the river of life and go where the flow takes us — which might be over a waterfall, or the top of a dam — or we can choose to take control and start to steer, and direct our efforts and make course corrections as required.

I am compelled to write this, which means someone needs to hear it today.

• Are you engaged in your life?  Or are you an innocent stander-by, waiting to see where the flow takes you?
• What is “life” telling you today? What is it urging you to do? What are you resisting that you know needs to happen because… it’s time?

It’s another one of those days!  You wake up in the morning, put on a happy face, start whistling while you’re walking around the house or the apartment — or you start humming, for you who are “whistle-challenged” — and the last thing on your mind for the day is… doing something that makes you nervous.

BUT you have to admit, when you do things you’re not used to, that you’re not good at, that make you use more of your brain and bravery than you’re normally accustomed to, you end up feeling a little exhilarated, a little pumped, and even if you don’t do it perfectly, secretly you’re a little proud of “you” for having tried it. Be honest — don’t you like that feeling? (Say yes!)

One of my favorite quotes is, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” (Neale Donald Walsch)  We’re not necessarily talking about WAY outside your comfort zone, just like from your front door to your mailbox outside :-)

So today… have some fun.  Find something you’ve been wanting — or needing to do, that makes you a little nervous; a little antsy — and do it :-) Maybe it’s making a phone call, trying a new recipe, calling that person you’ve been hesitant to call for a while, making that appointment you’ve been putting off… something!  For me, it was replacing the garbage disposal. It had been broken for at least a year. You’d have thought I was doing surgery, I did so much prep… But I did it — and then I told EVERYBODY!

What is it for you? Decide what it is, and make this your day to conquer it — or at least tackle it. If you listen closely, you’ll hear me cheering for you! YES!!! Woot woot!

Virtual Book Tour —  Sheila Applegate: I can’t think of too much more positive than unconditional love, and that’s the subject of  Sheila Applegate’s new book.  I met Sheila several months ago — connected on LinkedIn because she needed head shots for her book and she’d “been guided” to me for her photography.  This piqued my interest and I needed to know more.  What guided her — why me? and what for? — caught my interest.

Those answers were invigorating, as were her conversations regarding her book, such that I decided to interview her, and our interview became part of her virtual book tour.

It’s been an adventure-filled collaboration.  I did photograph her for the  book, and engaged photographer and graphic artist Mariana Roberts to add a little goddess-type magic to her image, which you’ll see during the presentation below, among others.

Good day, my friends!  I hope your new year is going according to schedule and according to plan and that your 2013 is off to a roaring start!  Mine is going very well and I hope to share some of that info with you in the near future.

Right now, however, I watched a video recently that I wanted to share with you.  I don’t read other people’s blogs as often as I should, but I do subscribe to a few.  Yesterday I opened one from my friend Molly Gordon.  I say friend; we’ve only spoken once on the phone, and some occasional twitter banter, but she’s just one of those people… who connect with you.  She was one of my first encouragers on Twitter, maybe the first phone call to someone “off twitter”, and though we haven’t been in each others’ ear every day, she’s shared some awesome, heartfelt wisdom over the years I’ve known her.

The video below is a New Years message for her subscribers, and I really enjoyed it, so I wanted to share it with you.  So in a round about way, Molly is my second “guest blogger” and I hope you enjoy listening to her “5 Principles for Creating Spaciousness, Ease, and Prosperity in 2013.”
